Lifeway Foods, the Illinois-based producer of the probiotic dairy beverage kefir, has reported a 50% rise in consolidated sales for the first quarter 2007 to US$9.02m.

The company said that sales of the Lifeway kefir brand had risen by 28% to $7.70m, with the remainder of the sales coming from the Helios kefir line and the Pride of Main Street milk brand.

“The first quarter (of) 2007 was another outstanding quarter for Lifeway Foods,” said CEO Julie Smolyansky. “Sales continue to grow at a record pace, and we continue to execute on all of our strategies for growth,”

Smolyansky said that the first two weeks of the year were unusually slow as many people returned from their holidays, but the third week of the year saw a “tremendous” increase in orders, and orders continued to increase during the three months, culminating in a record week in the final week of the quarter.

“Given this dramatic increase in sales in the first quarter, we feel very confident this trend will continue for the rest of 2007,” Smolyansky added.
