Falling local demand for bread has led US baker Hostess Brands to decide to close a site in Ohio.
Hostess, the company that arose from the bankruptcy of Interstate Bakeries Corp., said the bakery in Akron, Ohio would close in June.
The Akron site employs around 100 people. Hostess also has about 400 sales and retail personnel in the region, whose jobs will not be affected by the bakery closing as they will continue to sell products produced at another Hostess bakery in Ohio in Northwood.
“The age of the facility also would have made it difficult and expensive to modernise production equipment at the plant, as would have been needed to meet changing consumer preferences,” the company said.
