US poultry giant Pilgrim’s Pride will pay US$1m in compensation for discriminatory hiring practices.

Pilgrim’s Pride agreed to settle two cases with the US Department of Labor, which found that the company had engaged in hiring discrimination based on gender and ethnicity over a two-year period against some 5,300 applicants.

“This settlement of $1m on behalf of more than 5,300 applicants should put all federal contractors on notice that the department is serious about eliminating systemic discrimination,” said OFCCP deputy assistant secretary Charles James.

Under the terms of the settlement, Pilgrim’s Pride will pay more than 4,500 applicants rejected by its Dallas facility a total of $775,000 in back pay and interest, and will hire 361 unskilled labourers from the rejected applicant group.

More than 800 applicants rejected by a facility in Nacogdoches will receive a total of $225,000 in back pay and interest, while the company has agreed to hire more than 101 unskilled labourers from the class members.
