US cheese products specialist Sargento Foods has announced that it has acquired Portionables, a Washington-based manufacturer of frozen sauces.
Sargento said it plans to use Portionables’ expertise to enhance its new activities in the food ingredients and food service sectors. No details were disclosed regarding the financial terms of the deal.
“Portionables offered us an exciting and unique opportunity to secure best-in-class product development expertise and manufacturing,” said Sargento’s chairman and CEO Lou Gentine. “We believe that high-quality sauces and meal solutions where cheese and other fresh ingredients are integral to the recipe offer significant opportunities to better serve the expanding product needs of our customers. The combination of Portionables individually quick frozen (IQF) technology and our cheese expertise will help us realise this opportunity.”
Patrick Calliari, the president and co-founder of Portionables, whose range of sauces, soups, desserts, side dishes, and fruit and vegetable purées are sold in restaurants, cafeterias and retailers throughout North America and western Europe, said the two companies shared similar values with regard to consumer service and the deal boosted potential for new product development.
“The Sargento commitment to bringing high-quality taste experiences to consumers mirrors our own, and their unique cheese and other dairy expertise offers us a wonderful opportunity for new product development,” Calliari said.
Wisconsin-based Sargento said that sales and management responsibilities at Portionables would remain under Calliari’s direction, with Calliari reporting directly to Gentine.
