US retailer Target Corp has confirmed it has taken aim at urban customers through the launch of a new smaller scale format, CityTarget.

Target plans to open five CityTarget stores in urban locations this year, with more store openings in the pipeline for 2013.

A spokesperson for the company told just-food the group would open CityTargets in Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco while two outlets are planned for Los Angeles. In addition to these five stores, which are scheduled to open their doors this year, the company has already confirmed further planned openings for next year in Los Angeles and Portland.

“Offering urban guests an exceptional one-stop shopping experience, CityTarget stores will range between 80-100,000 square feet and will offer an edited assortment of high-quality merchandise that is tailored to meet the unique needs of urban guests. We will have more details to share about the merchandise assortment later this summer,” the spokesperson said.
