Unilever has entered into a multi-year collaboration agreement with Genomatica, a US systems biology company, to develop novel ingredients for use in Unilever products using Genomatica’s metabolic modelling and simulation technologies.

Genomatica’s metabolic models will be integrated with experimental and domain expertise at Unilever to create a discovery platform that will, it is anticipated, accelerate Unilever’s product research and development efforts.

Christophe H. Schilling, president and chief scientific officer at Genomatica, said: “Unilever has recognised the need to capitalise on our systems biology approaches to guide the development of novel products, and we look forward to a productive and fruitful collaboration with the Unilever team.”

“Unilever is very excited at the prospect of working with Genomatica in this cutting edge area of science and using open innovation to engage with the new ways of working which Genomatica will bring to our product design,” said Dominic Tildesley, chief scientist at Unilever.
