US soup maker Campbell Soup has announced that its first kosher soup is to appear in some US stores by late September.

Campbell said its condensed Vegetarian Vegetable Soup was certified kosher by the Orthodox Union (OU). In order to gain the certification Campbell said it had to completely shut down a production line at its Maxton, North Carolina facilities, so that all the equipment could be specially cleaned and certified by OU officials.

Campbell aims to have the product in stores in the northeast by late September, with national distribution expected by December.

If the kosher soup is successful, Campbell said it may look into seeking kosher certification for other soup varieties.

The company said some of its other brands, including most Pepperidge Farm cookies and Godiva chocolates, already have OU kosher certification.
