Popping vitamin pills to ward off heart disease may in fact be contributing to higher levels of LDL or “bad cholesterol” according to a recent United States study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

The research found that antioxidant vitamins such as Vitamins C, E and beta-carotene actually increased the liver’s production of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), a leading factor in the build-up of plaque in the arteries that causes heart disease.

However, doctors involved in the study cautioned against the abandonment of vitamin supplement, as the tests were performed on mice and because vitamins are beneficial for treating other ailments.
