Cranberry growers in the US have been told that sales limits will be reduced this year, in a bid to prop up the prices of the commodity and alleviate a market glut. The US government’s Agriculture Department has said that growers will be allowed to sell a third less fruit than normal, and it has imposed a sale limit of 4.6m barrels, which amounts to 65% of normal production.

The limit does not apply however to cranberries that are sold fresh or grown organically.

Some growers have criticised the move, saying that the limits do not go far enough. Indeed, the Cranberry Marketing Committee had recommended a limit of 4.7m barrels during its advisory role to the government.
