James Kufeldt, 63, former president of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc, died of an extended illness on November 12 at his home in Jacksonville, Florida.


Mr. Kufeldt joined Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. as a produce manager in 1961 and steadily advanced within the company. He was promoted to the corporate office in 1966 as Training and Work Methods Director. In 1970 he was promoted to the Tampa Division where he served in many management positions before being promoted to Retail Operations Superintendent of the Miami Division. In 1978 Mr. Kufeldt was named Division Manager of the company’s Orlando Division and in 1979 he was elected a Vice President of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. In 1982 he was named Regional Director of the company’s Jacksonville, Orlando and Atlanta divisions.  He was elected President and a member of the Board of Directors of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. in 1988. After serving as President for 11 years, he retired in 1999.


Born in Homestead, Florida on July 15, 1938 to Henry and Lydia Kufeldt, Mr. Kufeldt spent his early years in the South Dade area and graduated from South Dade High School in Homestead, and Anderson College in Indiana.


Mr. Kufeldt was a past Vice Chairman of the Board of Food Marketing Institute, member of the Board of Directors of Barnett Bank of Jacksonville, member of the Business Advisory Council of the University of North Florida College of Business Administration, member of the Board of Governors of the Uniform Code Council, member of the Board of Directors of North Florida Technology Innovation Corporation, member of the Symphony Youth Board, and a member of the Board of Directors of Integratus, Inc.


Mr. Kufeldt is survived by Anne Patricia Kufeldt, his loving wife of  41 years; children Tom and Carol Kufeldt, Sara and Ron Hall, and Philip and Kristin Kufeldt; grandchildren Elyse, Grace and Madeleine Kufeldt, Mark, Joe, Haley and Harrison Hall, and Henry, Olivia and Abigail Kufeldt; and brothers and sisters George, Marie, Esther, Wally and Ed.  He was preceded in death by his daughter Robin Lynn, his parents, and his brother Benjamin.

Jim Kufeldt’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 17 at the North Jacksonville Baptist Church, 8531 North Main Street in Jacksonville, Florida. The service will be officiated by Dr. Herb M. Reavis, Jr. and Rev. Roland Coffey.  Flowers may be sent to the church after 12:00 noon on Saturday.
