The use of ozone as an anti-microbial agent on meat and poultry products just before packaging was recently deemed acceptable by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The FSIS was asked for an interpretation on the use of ozone, earlier authorised by an FDA final rule in June, by the American Meat Institute on 27 November.

The FSIS responded saying: “The use of ozone on meat and poultry products, including treatment of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products just prior to packaging, is acceptable [and there are] no labelling issues in regard to treated product.”
