US food company H J Heinz is to introduce six new Smart Ones frozen meals aimed at consumers following a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet.

Heinz plans to launch the new Smart Ones line in conjunction with Weight Watchers International’s classroom lessons on “the truth about carbs”, Dow Jones News reported.

Smart Ones’ sales have been hit by the shift toward low-carb diets and away from low-calorie, low-fat diets. The additions to the range will be have more protein than existing Smart Ones meals and will be aimed at carbohydrate-conscious consumers, while the Weight Watchers programme is an opportunity to “reposition this debate, because frankly the debate is about caloric intake, not carbohydrates versus protein,” a Heinz official was quoted by Dow Jones as saying.

The company plans to start shipping the new products at the beginning of December but does not expect there to be significant distribution in stores until 1 February.
