Today at the Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting, Dr. Guy Miller spoke about the new Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act and supported measures requiring stricter testing and tighter regulation of food products in this country. As a key member of the panel-based forum, Functional Foods Opportunities: Searching for Global Technologies, Dr. Miller emphasized that moving forward, safety and efficacy data will be key for the development of successful nutraceutical products and indeed, for the sustainability of the industry as a whole.
There is a growing consumer demand for nutritional supplements, but in the U.S., these products and their claims aren’t based on rigorous science. Galileo Laboratories was founded in 1997, expressly to discover and develop evidence-based nutritional products and answer the question about how these products really work. Dr. Miller’s goal and that of Galileo Laboratories is to provide industry partners and ultimately consumers with products that are scientifically proven to be safe and effective.
“Galileo Labs has developed technologies which we anticipate will revolutionize the way nutritionals are developed, evaluated and marketed,” stated Dr. Miller. “Galileo has developed an integrated Cell Energy Discovery Platform based on accurate models of human metabolism. Unlike the traditional cell lines currently used to evaluate nutrients, the Galileo system makes it possible to test how nutrients and nutritional supplements work in a dynamic human system. We have developed a way to provide safe and effective products for consumers.”
To date, the company has screened over 300,000 compounds and has identified more than 1,000 nutritional candidates with significant antioxidant properties.
With the unique ability to discover and develop products scientifically proven to enhance performance and halt disease progression, Galileo is in the enviable position of being able to bridge the nutritional knowledge gap and answer the critical consumer question: “Which nutritional products work?”
Galileo has entered into product development agreements with key pharmaceutical and nutritional companies including: Warner-Lambert Company, Proctor & Gamble Co., and DMV International Nutritionals.
