Jitney Jungle was notified late on Saturday (4 November) that Hill & Valley Cheese, Inc. of Cashton, WI is voluntarily recalling certain Cheddar Cheese recently produced at the Hill & Valley factory. These cheeses may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Some of this Cheddar Cheese may have been packed for Jitney Jungle under the product name, Red Rind Cheddar, and sold on or after October 13, 2000 solely from the Meat Departments located in Jitney Jungle, Jitney Premier, Delchamps, Delchamps Premier and Sack and Save stores in the form of random weight wedges.

There are no other products affected by this recall. None of the affected cheeses was sold from our store’s Dairy or Deli Departments.

Jitney has received no reports of illness related to this product. As a precaution, Jitney Jungle Stores of America is asking their customers who have purchased this cheese not to consume it and to return the product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Listeria monocytogenes can also cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in pregnant women, young children, frail or elderly people and individuals with weakened immune systems.
