The US Department of Agriculture has ruled that milk can be sold at anytime and anywhere on school grounds, despite exclusivity deals between beverage suppliers and school districts.

This prohibits direct or indirect restrictions on the sale or marketing of fluid milk on school premises or at school-sponsored events, and only 100% milk products (white or flavoured) are covered. The ruling is a major victory for milk processors who have often been restricted to selling milk to students in the cafeteria, due to the contracts between soft drink companies and schools that often restrict milk sales. School contracts must be in compliance by the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year.
