German-based international ingredients supplier Nutrinova has announced that its high intensity sweetener Sunett® (acesulfame K) has been approved as a general purpose sweetener and flavour enhancer for the US by the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Sunett can now be applied in many new categories including snack foods and cereals, jams and jellies, sauces, dips and dressings, canned or processed fruit and vegetables, dairy products, vitamins and other dietary supplements, the company said.

The new legislation is based on a thorough evaluation of all the safety studies conducted on Sunett, Nutrinova said. Sunett had already been approved in the US for use in beverages, baked goods, chewing gum and confections, ice cream and yoghurts, tabletop sweeteners and nutritional supplements.
