A survey of poultry workers in North Carolina, USA, has revealed high rates of workplace injuries, although there are wide variations between companies.

The Wake Forest University School of Medicine “found high rates of musculoskeletal injuries”, with almost half of the 200 workers surveyed reporting hand or arm pain during the previous month and 20% unable to work for at least a day in the previous year because of pain.

The authors said companies could tackle the problem, given 70% of workers at one company had an illness or injury during the previous year, compared to under 30% and under 10% at two other companies.
