US meatpacking giant Smithfield Foods yesterday [Monday] said it had recalled 203,600 pounds of fresh ground beef products on concerns they may be contaminated with E. coli.
The meat in question had been distributed by Smithfield plant Moyer Packing, based in Souderton, Pennsylvania, to 11 US states, mostly in the Northeast. The recall was initiated after government tests found meat samples contaminated with the potentially deadly E. coli bacteria.
The recall comes just a couple of months after ConAgra Foods recalled nearly 19 million pounds of beef on E. coli fears, in the US’ second-largest ever beef recall. No consumers have reported illnesses related to this latest recall, however.
