The American Red Cross, Burger King Corporation and the National Franchise Association (NFA) yesterday announced that the 8,500 BURGER KING® restaurants in the United States have been named “Official Red Cross Donation Centers.” The BURGER KING® restaurants will begin selling American flag decals to raise money for the disaster relief fund. The announcement was made jointly by American Red Cross President and CEO, Dr. Bernadine Healy, Burger King Corporation Chairman, CEO and President John Dasburg and Steve Lewis, president of the NFA.

Executive Vice president and Chief Global Marketing Officer, Chris Clouser, said the Company expects the effort to raise millions of dollars for the families of the victims of last week’s tragedies. The BURGER KING® effort is a partnership between Burger King Corporation, the National Franchise Association and other BURGER KING® franchisees.

“Beginning October 1st, customers at all BURGER KING® restaurants can show their support for the families of victims by buying an American flag decal for only one dollar,” said Lewis. Net proceeds will go to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to aid the families of the victims of the September attacks.

Red Cross officials noted that Burger King Corporation is in an extraordinary position to offer aid and support, given the presence of its restaurants in nearly every city, town and community across the U.S. “We are trying to make it easy for Americans to help other Americans,” notes Dr. Bernadine Healy, president and CEO, the American Red Cross. “We’re urging Americans to visit their neighborhood BURGER KING® restaurants and give to the relief effort.”

“BURGER KING® restaurants in New York City, Washington, DC and the surrounding areas have already rallied to the cause — supplying food, water, Coca-Cola soft drinks and assistance to hundreds of rescue workers at the scene,” said Dasburg. “Burger King Corporation and its franchisees have been supplying about 8,000 sandwiches a day for the relief workers. By making our restaurants official donation centers for the American Red Cross, we are offering millions of Americans — as well as our own employees — a meaningful way to make a difference.”

In addition to collecting funds, Burger King Corporation will also donate monies from other fundraising activities to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, including a special link on www.burgerking.com that gives information to consumers on how to contribute to the Red Cross.
