Around 50% of US food industry professionals do not know that all domestic and most foreign food manufacturing and distribution facilities must register with the US Food and Drug Administration by 12 December this year as the FDA implements the Bioterrorism Act, while another 21% know about the requirement but have done nothing to prepare, according to a Food Institute survey.

The Food Institute said it administered the online survey to 1,292 food industry participants, and the Food Policy Institute (FPI) at Rutgers University analysed the results.

“There is a striking disparity between awareness and preparedness,” said Dr. Calum Turvey, director of the Food Policy Institute. “Many food firms are aware of the regulations, however, have not done a great deal to prepare.”
