Anglo-Dutch conglomerate Unilever is to expand its food processing activities in Vietnam. The group, which recently merged with US food giant Bestfoods, merged the Vietnamese subsidiaries of the respective groups in March to form Unilever-Bestfoods Vietnam.

General director Michel Dallemagne confirmed that additional investment has been earmarked for the US$1.5m factory already producing Knorr stock cubes in Dong Nai province. “Unilever is in one sense a wholly local company, with a 100% Vietnamese workforce processing food made only from materials available in this country,” said Dallemagne. Clearly working with an eye to the local market, Dallemagne claimed the company sought to tailor production to local preferences and produce at local level.

According to Asia Pulse, Unilever Vietnam already sources 60% of its supplies on the domestic market and counts its largely domestic workforce of over 1,700 as a key asset.
