The World Trade Organisation has upheld a panel ruling which determined that the US had infringed its rules by imposing limits on shippings of wheat gluten from the EU. Should the US push ahead with its restrictions despite the WTO decision, the European Commission is set to retaliate with increased levies on US corn gluten.

The WTO decision centred on US claims that increased EU wheat gluten imports were seriously compromising the domestic industry. The case has served to highlight, yet again, the intrinsic awkwardness of a global decision-making body designed to serve the greater good of all nations in trade-related disputes.
