The government of Zambia will not, after all, allow the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) to distribute genetically modified food aid to the 130,000 refugees in the coutry.

The State-run newspaper Times of Zambia reported today [Wednesay] that reports yesterday that Zambia had given the go-ahead to the WFP to give GM food aid to refugees were misleading. Home affairs minister Luckson Mapushi is quoted as saying that its final decision came after the WFP had already distributed over 6,000 tonnes of GM grain, giving rise to the confusion.

Mapushi said: “The position of government rejecting GMFs was a national one which applies to all categories of persons living in Zambia.”

Zambia is concerned over the safety of GM food for human consumption and the environment, and about the status of its future exports to the EU if its crops became contaminated with genetically modified material.
