Spanish ice-cream manufacturer La Menorquina is expanding its production.
The site in Palau-solità i Plegamans in Barcelona province is getting a cash injection of more than €15m ($17.7m) for a new production line.
In a statement issued yesterday (16 February), the company described the project as the “largest” ever investment in the plant. The business was founded by Fernando Sintes in 1940 and is owned by the London-based fund Cheyne Capital Management, which acquired a 97.5% stake in 2020.
The company produces sticks, cones and ice lollies under its namesake brand supplied to markets across Europe.
The line will be able to produce 30,000 ice creams per hour, equivalent to 10 million litres of ice cream annually.
It is due to be operational by the end of the year and will add 1,100 square metres to the factory’s production area.
The output at the facility stands at 34 million litres a year across 22 lines.
“This line is unique in the world for its high capacity, capable of producing chocolates, ice-cream sandwiches and spirals on the same line,” according to the statement.
The company added the investment will generate more than 150 new jobs.
Iván Leal, the CEO of La Menorquina, said: “This new line will allow us to continue serving our customers, increasing our efficiency and competitiveness, as well as reinforcing our position as one of the leading companies in the sector.”
La Menorquina employs around 750 people, more than 500 of them at the Palau-solità i Plegamans plant.
It is described as the largest ice-cream factory in Catalonia and one of the largest in Spain.
The company's sales reached €131m in 2025. Growth this year is forecast in the “double-digit” area.
La Menorquina exports to around 40 countries, including the UK, Portugal, France, Italy and the US.
