Nestlé is to shut a manufacturing facility in the US supplying the foodservice sector.

The plant in Solon in Ohio makes products sold in pouch packaging to foodservice clients.

Production carried out at the facility will move to another factory in Gaffney in South Carolina.

Staff were told of the plans yesterday (19 October). Nestlé declined to comment on the number of jobs that will be affected. Production is expected to end by the third quarter of next year.

“As customer needs and volumes evolve, we determined that building on capabilities already in place elsewhere in our network was the most sustainable path forward,” Nestlé said in a statement.

The Swiss giant’s other facilities on the Solon site will remain open. They house corporate and R&D operations.

Nestlé has seven facilities in Ohio. In August, the company opened a new pet-food factory in Batavia.

Two years ago, Nestlé cut jobs at the Solon site, which, at the time, also made retail products sold under the Lean Cuisine and Stouffer’s brands.

In October last year, Nestlé CEO Philipp Navratil set out plans to cut 16,000 jobs worldwide, comprising 12,000 white-collar roles and 4,000 in manufacturing and within the supply chain.

The world’s largest food maker is investing in capex. As well as the new pet-food site in Ohio, the company, for example, is expanding south of the border in Mexico.

Last week, the group said it is planning to spend another $1bn on its business in the country up to the end of 2030.

Nestlé is part-way through a $1bn investment programme in Mexico up to the end of 2027, which includes a Maggi factory, an “experience centre” for its Purina pet-food business and the expansion of production capacity at its Nescafé factory in Veracruz.
