Greenyard has signed an agreement with international retailer Ahold Delhaize to supply fresh fruit and vegetables in its home market of Belgium.
The “strategic value-chain agreement” has been formulated with Greenyard’s Bakker Belgium division, according to a statement today (28 May). The unit will invest an undisclosed sum in a “dedicated” facility to supply Delhaize from 2020 as Greenyard builds on its existing relationship with the retailer.

“Currently, the companies are working on the integration of the key processes to ensure a fully controlled supply model, which will lead to more innovations, shorter and more efficient value chains, better availability and improved freshness,” Greenyard said.
Greenyard’s latest deal with a major retailer follows a new partnership with UK supermarket Tesco through its frozen division to supply fruit, vegetables and herbs, and comes on the back of a transformation plan launched at the start of the year amid a set of disappointing financial results. Marc Zwaaneveld, who was recently brought in to initially oversee the plan, was also installed a co-chief executive in February, joining Hein Deprez.
Brussels-listed Greenyard said the agreement with Delhaize will boost revenue growth by way of the increase in volumes of fruit and vegetables.
Adrie Bakker, the general manager at Bakker Belgium, commented on the Delhaize tie-up: “We will be more than a supplier to Delhaize. Our aim is to add value. Using our expertise in sustainable supply-chain management, we will be a partner for both Delhaize and the Delhaize suppliers’ network”.
