Nestlé is investing in its US production network, adding capacity to a factory making entrées in South Carolina.
The world’s largest food maker said the US$100m investment at the facility in Gaffney would lead to an existing production line being expanded and another added.
Products sold under the Stouffer’s and Lean Cuisine brands are made at the plant.
“The frozen-food category has been growing for the last few years, and the pandemic has only increased that trend,” Nicole Caldwell, the site’s factory manager, said. “As people spent more time at home, they rediscovered the convenience, value and great taste of frozen foods.”
When Nestlé announced its first-quarter sales in April, the company said its sales of frozen food across its Americas business had risen at a “double-digit rate” year-on-year. It does not break its category sales down by market but pointed to the growth of Stouffer’s and Lean Cuisine.
So far in 2021, Nestlé has announced capex projects in Indonesia, China and elsewhere in the US. The company is expanding a site in Jonesboro in Arkansas to manufacture frozen sandwiches sold under its Hot Pockets brand. That site also makes products sold under the Stouffer’s and Lean Cuisine brands.
